Prosecutor, 6 others killed in Guatemala
GUATEMALA CITY: A Guatemala federal prosecutor and six other people were killed in an attack near the Mexican border blamed on drug traffickers, officials said Monday.
The attackers burned the bodies of their victims, including Chiquimula prosecutor Irma Oliveras, a businessman and the director of a regional government social services agency, said Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez. The bodies of three bodyguards were found in another charred vehicle nearby. ''The modues operandi of the attackers corresponds to drug trafficking groups'' operating in the border region, he added. According to Lopez, the victims were returning from the inauguration of a hotel in La Messilla city.
Mexican drug cartels, especially Los Zetas, have expanded their operations to Guatemala, a source of cocaine being smuggled into the United States. About 42 percent of crimes and acts of violence in Guatemala are tied to drug trafficking, according to government estimates.

Nokia patent deal with RIM to lift finances
HELSINKI: Struggling Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) has settled its patent dispute with BlackBerry maker Research in Motin (RIM.TO) in return for payments, as it tries to exploit its trove of technology patents to boost its dire finances.
Terms of the agreement were confidential, but Nokia said on Friday it included a one-time payment to be booked in the fourth quarter,as well as ongoing fees, all to be paid by RIM.
Nokia is one of the industry's top patent holders, along with Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and Ericsson (ERICb.ST), having invested 45 billion euros in mobile research and development over the past two decades.
It has been trying to make use of that legacy to ensure its survival as it battles to recover ground lost in the lucrative smartphone market to the likes of Apple (APPL.O) and Samsung (005930.KS).
With sales and cash reserves falling and its credit rating cut to junk over the past year, Nokia in October announces a 750 million euros convertible bond to help fund its fightback.
The agreement with RIM settles all existing patent litigation between the two companies, Nokia said, adding similar disputes with HTC Corp (2498.TW) and ViewSonic still stood.
''This agreement demonstrates Nokia's Industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market, ''said Paul Melin, Nokia's chief intellectual property officer.
Nokia has earned around 500 million euros a year from patent royalties in key areas of mobile telephony.
Some analysts have said it could earn hundreds of millions more if it can negotiate with more companies successfully.
They estimated its June 2011 settlement with Apple was worth hundreds of millions of euros, but said the RIM agreement was likely worth much less because of lower BlackBerry sales.
''Not hundred of millions , ''said Martin Nilsson, analyst at Handelsbanken, when asked for an estimate on the settlement. He added the news was positive, if not surprising.
''More or less, when companies like Ericsson, Qualcomm or Nokia go into negotiations, they end up net winners,''
Nokia shares fell 3 percent to 3.07 euros by 1000 GMT. They have been retreating in the past few sessions from their strong surge of the past month.
They rose around 40 percent over the month through Tuesday on speculation its new Lumia smartphones were selling well. Analysts have warned the phones appeared sold out in many stores as supplies were short to begin with. AGENCIES

New Zealand trounced in first match
DURBAN: South Africa sent New Zealand crashing to an eight-wicket defeat with 47 balls to spare in the first Twenty20 international at Kingsmead on Friday.
Fast bowler Rory Kleinveldt took two early wickets a slide from which New Zealand never recovered. They were bowled out for 86 after winning the toss.
Klelinveldt took the key wickets of Rob Nicol and captain Brendon McCullum and finished with three for 18 to capture the man-of-the-match award.
South Africa romped home in 12.1 overs with new captain Faf du Plessis making 38 not out, while Quinton de Kock, making his debut four days after his 20th birthday, slammed a quick 28 not out.
It was a disappointing start for New Zealand, who arrived as underdogs but were expected to put up a reasonable fight in the Tweny20 internationals.
They were missing several key players, including former captian Ross Taylor, who was unavailable for the tour, and suffered another blow when experienced batsman Marin Guptil could not play at Kingsmead because of a stomach ailment.
Fast bowler Trent Boult was also unavailable because of a similar complaint.
On a pitch with pace and bounce, the tourists lost three wickets inside the first five overs. Nicol charged Kleinveldt and was caught behind, while McCullum top-edged a hook and was caught at fine leg. In between Peter Fulton drove Dale Steyn to mid-on.
It did not get much better for the Black Caps although left-handed newcomer Colin Munro, who was born in Durban and did his early schooling in the city before his family moved to New Zealand, made 23. Doug Bracewell hit 21 not out.
Steyn, new comer Chris Morris and left-arm spinner Robin Peterson all took two wickets.
New Zealand new comer Mitchill McClenaghan had Richard Levi caught at slip for a duck, bowling a wicket maiden at the start of the South African innings.
But Henry Davids and Du Plessis put on 45 before Du Plesis and De Kock finished the match.

Oil prices dip on profit-taking, fiscal cliff deal concerns
By AFP
SINGAPORE: Oil prices fell in Asia on Friday, with traders taking profits after a recent rally and as US politicians continue to wrangle over a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, analysts said.
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in February fell 70 cents to $89.43 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for February dropped 45 cents to $109.75.
''After a big rally in price over the last few days people are happy to exit and reap a form of profit while taking risk off the table,'' Jason Hughes, the head of premium client management at IG Markets Singapore told.
''We are also seeing a more cautions approach in Asia just in case US politicians don't come to a resolution to avoid the fiscal cliff.''
Crude prices rose earlier in the week on a sharper-than-expected fall in US crude inventories as lawmakers appeared to make headway on a deal to avert the huge tax hikes and spending cuts due to take effect at the start of January.
But talk appeared to hit an impasse when top Republican John Boehner pressed ahead with a controversial ''Plan B'' that extends tax breaks for everyone earning less than $1 million per year.
US President Barack Obama, however, has said he is willing to go no higher than $400,000.
Boehner, who is Speaker of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, on Thursday scrapped a vote on the plan as he acknowledged that he did not have sufficient support even from within his own party.

Indian courts Italian marines to go home for Chrismas
KOCHI, India: Two Italian marines charged with killing two fishermen off the coast of Kerala will likely be allowed to spend Chrismas in Italy, after a court on Thursday accepted the sailor's plea to go home for the holiday season.
The sailors are awaiting trial in connection with the shooting death in February, and case has soured relations between New Delhi and Rome. Italy has challenged India's right to try the men, arguing in the New Delhi Supreme Court that the shooting took place in international waters.
The sailors, members of a military security team protecting the cargo ship Enrica Lexie from pirate attacks, fired on a fishing boat they say they mistake for a pirate craft off the southern Indian state of Kerala.
The Kerala high court's decision came just days after Italy demanded a quick decision by the supreme court to allow the men to go on trial in Rome. No decision is expected by the court, however, until January. -- AGENCIES
